Characterizing plastics from large household appliances: Brominated flame retardants, other additives and density profiles

چکیده
Large household appliances contain substantial amounts of plastics. At their end life, these are processed in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) treatment plants where a mixed plastic fraction is generally obtained after mechanical processing. This paper presents the results study conducted to investigate whether practice recycling streams without decontamination can be continued introduction 1000 mg/kg threshold value for sum polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) 2019 recast European POP regulation. 25 samples shredded plastics from large were collected analysed by two independent chemical laboratories with regard various Brominated Flame Retardants (BFRs), heavy metals tracers common additives. Results show that currently applicable values regarding BFRs not exceeded any samples. However, relevant PBDEs (up 791 mg/kg), tetrabromobisphenol-A 1470 mg/kg) antimony 1200 detected, all which under consideration more stringent regulation EU. further due limitations analytical precision representative sampling, quantification legacy substances WEEE fractions very challenging level confidence decisions legal compliance taken limited. It strongly recommended challenges into account when new defined order enable clean circular economy.

The levels of PBDEs, alternate BFRs and dechloranes in European Eel (Anguilla anguilla) samples (elvers, yellow and silver eels) were investigated to compare the contamination of eels from the rivers Elbe and Rhine and to estimate the BFR contamination throughout the eel's life cycle. PBDEs were the dominating flame retardants (FRs) in muscle tissues of yellow and silver eels, while the alterna...
